The Blood Covenant Part 17

It's the covenant that fulfills the longing of God, granting us the gift of his life. That gift makes us his children, giving us the privilege of enjoying intimate friendship with him. Psalms 25:14 The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. This puts into one sentence the incredible plan God has purposed for us. The uniting of God and man in the strong bond of friendship is achieved by the covenant God has made with us in the person of Jesus Christ. God loves the world but believers are his circle of intimate friends with whom he shares his heart. Every believer has been called to such a relationship with God in the person of Jesus Christ and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. We've seen one of the major differences between contract and covenant is in what's being exchanged. A contract is the exchange and passing of property and/or possessions. A covenant is the exchange of persons. Contract says, "This is now yours", covenant says, "I am now yours". So God doesn't merely promise his impersonal blessing. His blessing is the gift of himself in the person of the Holy Spirit. The covenant is not with us as individuals but with the "People" who are in Christ - with whom the covenant is made. We have an intensely personal relationship with God in Christ but we don't have an individual relationship - it's a corporate one. He said, "I will be your God, and you shall be my people." This is the secret of using temptation. Don't see temptation as the enemy but the necessary confronting of the negative for the glorious positive of our life in Christ to blaze forth. We can't show forth the life of Christ in a vacuum. He is seen over and against the negative of the flesh. Lazarus had to die before he could be raised. The power of Jesus to raise the dead can only be seen with a dead body. Trial and temptation are allowed in our lives to draw out of us the fullness of the life of Christ. Except for the temptation we wouldn't think of drawing from him. You can send questions or comments to jim.moore77@hotmail.com or join us on our website at www.rhythmsofgracecommunityfellowship.com. We "put on" the behavior of Christ because abiding in him, being present to him, knowing who we are in Christ, we know such behaviors to be the truth. He never asks us to be who we are not. In scripture, the garment describes the person. We put on garments of praise because we have been called out of darkness to proclaim his praises. We are joined to him who is love. The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts and we choose with an act of will to clothe ourselves in love behavior. The energy of the Spirit connects our behavior with our true selves in Christ and our whole being is drawn into line. The Christian life can be summed up as the consciousness that he lives within us and we draw upon his infinite life in every situation we find ourselves in. This means as we grow in Christ and mature, we will have an increasing sense of our own weakness. The reason being so that we might no longer trust in ourselves and so proportionately live from his strength. The phrase "in Christ" indicates we are vitally in and part of the historical events that took place in Jesus by the Holy Spirit. We have actually been joined and made one with Christ, so that his history is our history. We are one with him in all that he has accomplished and all that he is now in the heavens. The christian life is the continual act of remaining in him, dwelling in him, being aware of him as our life and perservering in this relationship. It is choosing to be present to him who is committed to always be present with us. Our repentance doesn't move an angry, insulted God to grant forgiveness. Rather we are greeted by intense passionate love that ambushes us, to which we respond in repentance. If Jesus is alive from the dead then we are forgiven. Forgiveness and all the blessings of the covenant don't come to us merely through Christ but in Him. We don't receive them only because he earned them but by our being united together with him and in him, members of his body by the Holy Spirit! In this lesson we discuss the covenant meal. The meal is at the heart of the covenant. Every covenant ended with a meal that declared that the covenant was valid and now functional in the lives of the parties to it. Jesus said "Do this in remembrance of me". To understand the meal we have to understand the word "remember". How can remember if we wasn't there? To submit to Jesus in the Gospel demands we turn away from all that we falsely believed to be the meaning and way of life. The bible word is called repentance which means a radical change of mind. It's the realization that all of my life has been wrong because it has been lived from the wrong center. It's not repenting of a certain sin but a change of mind about oneself, realizing I don't know the way of life and I now recognize it as death. The real issue now is not sin. Jesus has dealt with sin once and for all. The issue is whether we will accept the divine amnesty and let him send away our sins and be reconciled to God. God's faithfulness is the out working of his covenant oath. He didn't need to swear an oath in order to bind himself to keep covenant. His covenant is the means of revealing to us who he is. Understanding the oath of God takes all the pressure and tension out of life and introduces us to the rest of God. The whole burden of the covenant promises is upon God. Instead of laboring to exhaustion trying to please God, we live in the rest of faith in his faithfulness.
