God's power is not bigger than man's power. It's in a totally different category. It has nothing to do with man's power. That's why it's a scandal to us. It wasn't that he was all powerful then chose to be weak. The weakness of Jesus is the power of God. This is about the parable of the sower (soils). The stony ground hearer never allows the message to challenge his whole life and motives. He doesn't think this through, the conclusions of the gospel. He doesn't allow this message, the scandal of the cross to saturate his being. That is he failed to see what union with Christ meant in terms of the relationship he would have thereafter with the world. All other religions give you a list of rules, ten steps to a better life, principles of living. Yet we come upon a beaten man hanging on a cross. Paul says, there is the power and glory of God. We don't get it so we sneak back to the law. Why? The law is safe, it's like other religions. It's a lists of do and don't. Simple, I do and I don't and I feel safe again. Now I've got something to boast in. It's a scandal to say God loves us and has totally forgiven us, all at his own cost. At the cross I come to the end of me, yet it's really the beginning! 1Co 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
1Co 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness. Wherever Jesus went, whatever he did, he left behind conflict and confusion. He turned everything upside down. Until Jesus has deeply troubled you, until Jesus is a stone of stumbling to you, you haven't really touched the heart of the gospel. The gospel is offensive, it troubles me, it upsets me. Then the gospel is the power of God in my life.
