The Law drew out sin. Wherever the Law was, sin abounded. The Law exposed the way things were. Sin and death abounded. Jesus was saying the way of the Law is over when he announced "abide in me". There is an entirely new way to live, it's not an option, "abide in me". Jesus says it's over, without me you can do nothing. No longer an external Law to guide them. Life is now defined as a relationship to him. No longer Law to make me accepted by God and to know him. Now it's Jesus. We are called to "Abide" in Christ. He abides in the Father who is love. If we abide in Jesus, we abide in the Father, we abide in the Holy Trinity. This is normal Christian life. The Father, who is love, sends the Son. The Son, who is love's explanation, love's demonstration, came to seek us and to save us. God the Son sends God the Holy Spirit, who is love loving. God the Holy Spirit is love in the act of loving and comes to put his arms around us and to cause all that Jesus did to take place in us. The blessing is Jesus, he is the final word that God said. In him, we are blessed, empowered by the Holy Spirit. He is the meaning of existence. He is the purpose of our being here. The whole of existence takes place in God. Even though men hate him, yet they are not separated from him. God is there doing his purpose with their evil. He takes the lie they believe and uses it to show them the emptiness of their lives. He uses the very lie they believe to bring them to truth. The blessing for old covenant Israel was the presence of God with them in the tabernacle in the most Holy place. In the new covenant the blessing for Israel (those of faith of Jesus Christ) is Christ in you. Fear is the energy of the great lie. That is you shall be as gods independent of God. That's what the New Testament calls the "flesh". Yet we have been blessed of God.
