This is the story that always told us - if we could just turn our attention toward peace, we would see how close God really is and now it's even more beautiful that we even remember it. The cries of newborn life - where we least expect to find it - God with us - in us - all around us - just waiting for us to notice.

Forgiveness of sins is to be seen, both as the summary of the redemptive blessings promised to Israel, and as the key blessing that will enable Gentiles to be welcomed into the one family. The purpose of forgiving sin is to enable people to become fully functioning, fully image-bearing human beings within God's world - even now - and completely in the age to come.

This is at the heart of the good news. We have died. We don't have to ask for death or seek it or work ourselves up to it, just accept the death we already have, and in the clean emptiness of that death, we find the life that all along has been hid for us in Christ in God.

The sign of a Naaman, of a step towards the light, is the sense that in the resurrection, the true God has revealed himself to be your God. He has called you to worship him, to straighten out your thinking - with Him at the center - and to follow this Jesus along the way.

Images of Exodus crowd into verse after verse so that even though in one text we may be dealing with Babylon, in another Syria, or in another Rome - memories of the ancient slavery in Egypt are never far away.

The forgiveness of sins was a huge, life-changing, world changing reality - long promised and long awaited. It was the fulfillment of Israel's hope for restoration along with the sense that when Israel was restored, this would somehow generate a new day for the whole human race.
